The Politics
of the Real Jesus

Joanna Dewey & Jarmo Tarkki

Who was the historical Jesus and how did he relate to the social and political issues of his time? What were his attitudes toward nature, the economy, war and peace? What does Jesus have to do with justice and politics today?

LECTURE

Jarmo Tarkki
Political Radical or Religious Reformer?

From the Constantinian Christ of the Christian Creeds to the Jesus of Mark, Matthew and Luke. Is the “WWJD” question feasible? Was Jesus a socialist? Was Jesus a pacifist? Was Jesus green?

Joanna Dewey
Jesus’ Social Revolution
The “Kingdom of God” is what the world would look like if God were in charge. What kind of society would that be?
     Friday, 7:30–9 P.M.

WORKSHOPS

Joanna Dewey
Jesus and the Politics of His Day

The politics and governance of the Roman Empire confronted both Jesus and his later followers with hard personal and social choices. This workshop continues to explore Jesus’ and his first followers' challenge to the Roman Empire and its way of doing things. Then it examines the shift in the Jesus movement’s sense of community and ethics as it moved from Galilee into the wider Roman world and gradually conformed itself to the ways of the Empire.
      Saturday, 9:30–Noon

Jarmo Tarkki
Jesus and the Politics of Today
How is Jesus relevant to politics in the twenty-first Century? We will attempt to connect the dots between Jesus’ most authentic sayings and political strategies in the U.S. and the world today.
      Saturday, 1–2 P.M.

Jarmo Tarkki & Joanna Dewey
The presenters will entertain questions from the audience and sum up what has been discussed during the course of the program.
      Saturday, 2:15–3:15 P.M.
