Mary Magdalene, the Woman Who Knew Too Much
What can we know about the place of Mary Magdalene in the early Jesus movement? Both the official and unofficial versions of Christian tradition silence and defame this “apostle to the apostles.” Why? Where do the traditions of Mary as repentant prostitute and Jesus’ wife come from? How does the portrait of Mary in the canonical gospels differ from that found in early Christian apocryphal texts? And what, exactly, were Peter and Mary fighting about?

Peter and Paul: Face-off in Antioch
When Peter visited the church in Antioch, Paul accused him of hypocrisy to his face at a congregational meeting. What was this confrontation about? What was at stake? Did Paul win or lose this argument?

Christian Origins: Historical and Ethical Issues for the Church
Are the conflicting claims of historical knowledge and traditional Christian belief the principal issue confronting the church today? If so, what is at stake and how should we deal with this issue? Is Mary Magdalene relevant only for her witness to women’s authority, or does her example also speak to larger issues of gender and sexuality faced in the churches? And should her role in early Christianity prompt changes in regards to women’s leadership roles in today’s church?

FACULTY
Bernard Brandon Scott (Ph.D., Vanderbilt University) is the Darbeth Distinguished Professor of New Testament at the Phillips Theological Seminary, Tulsa, OK. He is the author of several books, including Hear Then the Parable (1989) and Re-Imagine the World (2002), and editor of Jesus Reconsidered (2007).
Kathleen E. Corley (Ph.D. Claremont Graduate School) is the Oshkosh Northwestern Distinguished Professor. A member of the Steering Committee of the Historical Jesus Section in the Society of Biblical Literature, her books include Private Women, Public Meals (1993) and Women and the Historical Jesus (2002).
