Archaeology & the Origins of Christianity

Milton C. Moreland & Jonathan L. Reed

ILLUSTRATED LECTURE

Artifacts, Excavations, & Faith
The Legacy of Biblical Archaeology
Media-hype around the James Ossuary, Da Vinci Code, and Jesus Family Tomb seeks to establish archaeology as an arbiter of faith. But neither biblical nor more recent “anti-biblical” archaeology reveals what archaeology can offer someone interested in early Christianity. Instead of flashy discoveries, Moreland and Reed will introduce cutting-edge fieldwork that has transformed our understanding of the historical Jesus and the origins of Christianity.

Friday, 7:30–9 P.M.

WORKSHOPS

Archaeology & Gospels in Galilee
Within Jesus’ lifetime two Roman-style cities in Galilee transformed Jewish rural culture. Utilizing slides from the most recent excavations, the presenters will explore the potential impact of Sepphoris and Tiberias on Galilean villages and on Jesus himself. They will discuss how current archaeological fieldwork could, in fact, even change the way Jesus’ sayings are understood. What, for example, would the “Kingdom of God” mean with Rome looming on the horizon?

Saturday, 9:30 A.M.-NOON

Archaeology & Paul’s Letters
How did Paul and other early Christians translate Jesus’ message in the pagan cities of the Greek Aegean under Roman rule—places like Ephesus and Thessaloniki, Corinth and Philippi? In an illustrated presentation, Reed and Moreland will show how archaeology can sketch the social, political, and religious environment. They will discuss ways in which Paul’s letters address issues like colonial-imperialism, cosmopolitan sexual practices, and radical class inequities.

Saturday, 1:30–4 P.M.

Milton C. Moreland (Ph.D., Claremont Graduate University) is Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Director of the Program in Archaeology at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. He has excavated in Galilee since 1993. He is the editor of Between Text and Artifact: Integrating Archaeology into Biblical Studies Teaching (2003). His other publications include two edited books on the sayings of Jesus.

Jonathan L. Reed (Ph.D., Claremont Graduate University) is Professor of Religion at the University of La Verne in California. The Director of the Sepphoris Acropolis Excavations, he is the author of the HarperCollins’ Visual Guide to New Testament (2007), Archaeology and the Galilean Jesus (2000), and co-author with John Dominic Crossan of In Search of Paul (2004) and Excavating Jesus (2001).
