Jesus & the Kingdom of God
Then & Now
Arthur J. Dewey & Perry Kea
LECTURE
Arthur Dewey & Perry V. Kea
The Rise and Fall of Traditional Christianity
How did Christianity grow from a small dissident band led by a peasant-prophet-teacher into a religion that served the political needs of the Roman Empire and the religious needs of people throughout the centuries? Dewey and Kea will address that question and discuss how, in the modern era, advances in the sciences, experiences of religious pluralism, and the historical criticism of the Bible challenge the intellectual and religious adequacy of traditional Christianity.
Friday, 7:30–9 P.M.
WORKSHOPS
Perry Kea
The Historical Jesus and the Kingdom of God: the message
Early Christians turned Jesus into a divine savior who demanded worship. The historical Jesus, however, talked about the Kingdom of God, not about himself. Using gospel material identified by the Jesus Seminar as authentic, the presenters uncover Jesus' radical vision of human life under God's rule.
Arthur Dewey
Paul and the Roman Empire
This session will use images from Roman imperial art to understand how the apostle Paul engaged the "kingdom" of the ancient world, the Roman Empire.
Saturday, 9:30–noon
Arthur Dewey
Living in the Kingdom of God
Jesus did more than simply talk about the Kingdom. He lived and invited
others to live this radical vision of human life under God's rule-not in the
afterlife, but in the here-and-now. What might Jesus' vision of life in the
Kingdom entail today, in terms of both its joys and its costs?

The Kingdom of God Today
For centuries, Christianity has ignored the Kingdom of God. Should we pay
attention today? Does it have any relevance for modern faith and culture?
Dewey and Kea will lead a discussion on the relationship between historical
evidence and religious faith.
Saturday, 1:30–4 P.M.
