The Gospel of Mary
The Gospel of Mary illuminates a strand of early Christianity that has been lost for almost two thousand years. It envisions a Christianity that focuses on internal spiritual development and rejects external saviors, legalistic regulations, and a theology of sin and guilt. It affirms Jesus' teaching as a challenge to become truly human rather than a dogma to be accepted or rejected. In the morning session, Karen King will introduce participants to the Gospel of Mary — its origins, contents, and place in early Christianity — and will inquire after its historical significance. In the afternoon, she will explore what the teachings from the Gospel of Mary might mean for today's world.

Did Mark use the story of the "passion and death" of Jesus, son of Ananias, reported by Josephus, to create his passion narrative? Scholars have long argued that Mark drew on a pre-Markan passion story. But, while some scholars have previously noted parallels between the stories in Mark and Josephus, Ted Weeden will argue that Mark actually created his stories of the Jewish and Roman trials using an oral form of the story of Jesus of Ananias. Furthermore, he contends that not only Mark, but Luke and John also borrowed elements of Josephus' story to enhance their passion narratives.

He also explores ways in which fundamentalists are able to build alliances with others who share their same metaphorical system but not their religious fundamentalism. According to Scott, liberal theology is not only vulnerable to a fundamentalist challenge but actually encourages it. In six guidelines for a future theology, he suggests ways in which we can respond theologically to this challenge?
